Here, in my opinion, usually the confusion arised because of the instruction(s) given by various parties. A. If one is using an ORDINARY compass, then use this method: http://www.geomancy.net/fs/cecilcompass.htm One will normally not go wrong using the above method. B. But if one is using a Chinese LUOPAN, then, measurement can be different. Here, it is not uncommon to find out the facing and sitting direction. Thus, one has to be absolutely CLEAR which TOOL is being used. For the flow of Qi, on `paper' since the main entrance has been considered as the MOUTH of the house, then this is a crucial area of Qi coming into the home. On other areas of Feng Shui, one could also look at the frontage or the location where most light enters the home. - Here, it is still best to take the compass reading from the centrepoint to the main entrance. In many of the pictures you will see that the flags are placed according to North, South, East and West. You can also see the romanised character of each of the Mandarin word for: North - Bei (or a good example is Beijing, the capital of China. Where `Bei' refers to North and thus one can now understand that Beijing is located in the `north'. South - is known as `nan'. East - as `dong' West - is `xi'. For example, it can either be inauspicious or auspicious. 3. It is always best that you look at the commercial viablility mainly:- 3.1 History of previous business. Try to find out, the type of business and if you are going in on with the same business. Why did the previous owner give up? (if it is an existing location). How is business at the locality. 3.2 If you have the time, try to monitor the traffic and business (depending on the week of the day i.e. sample of business on a Monday-Friday? If you have determined using Flying Star and found that this is a misfortune area, usually this #5 should be looked at in conjuction with the other two Flying Star numbers of that sector. For example, mountain #5, water star #2, base star #3 - under Flying Star, and using the Five Elements concept, this sector is out of balance. Dear Anon, 1. Can you confirm whether there are any `poison arrows' threatening your main entrance door. 2. I would normally not recommend using a Ba Gua without a proper reason for doing so. 3. Usually, it is common for the Ba Gua to be hung for the following reasons:- 3.1 To help ward off `sha qi' or poison arrows aimed at the main entrance. Best to stand at the main entrance looking out of the house. Look out for poison arrow(s) in the form of a pointed roof of a neighbour's home aimed at the main door or a lone lamp post which seemed to be `slicing' the main entrance or any windows of the room. 3.2 In the `East' it is usually used in conjuction with:- - Charms written on yellow paper to ward off evil. - Or a Ba Gua mirror with the two door gods attached to the picture. The URL is at: http://www.geomancy.net/fs/pakua.htm Please see below (my comments):- In my opinion, it is best not to `verify' what was written at another site but rather; I feel that it would be better to bring out two differing camps - the `issues' relating to this subject. And that, in my opinion there are no right or wrong answers. Ultimately, each of us, should form our own opinion. Yes, there are two opposing views: 1. One view is that it can be used to either ward off evil or used against `Sha Qi' or poison arrows. Within this camp, some FS practitioners may agree with using it to ward off evil and/or `Sha Qi'. While some FS practitioners may only agree with either it being used to ward off evil or used only against `Sha Qi'. 2. Some FS practitioners may feel that using Ba Gua mirror is simply " Bull-shit ". If I read the words correctly, the central argument is that it "does not reflect back anything i.e. reflect back evil". Yes, in my opinion, I also feel that it does not reflect back evil. The main situation why some FS practitioners may perhaps be improperly quoted is that they feel that the Ba Gua mirror should not be placed inside the home. The reason is that the "First Heaven Sequence" mirror (reference: http://www.geomancy.net/fs/pakua.htm ) can be considered to be kinda of - "too Yang" to be placed inside a normal home. (For example, it is acceptable to be placed inside a temple, this is acceptable.) As a temple is considered a depository of people's sorrow/problems etc... The above is one view-point. Because, of the suggestion that it should not be placed in side the home, some FS practitioners may perhaps, conclude that these " FS practitioners" may have wrongly interpreted as it being bad as it can `bounce back evil'. The Ba Gua mirror, is not an evil thing and how come, it can `bounce back evil'? Perhaps, there is some misunderstanding of it here. This Fu Xi Bagua or also known as the First Heaven sequence has trigram arrangement that `picture perfect' in that the opposite trigram shows a relationship to each other. So you have: Heaven to Earth; Wind to Thunder; Water to Fire; Mountain to Lake. Frankly, there are many interpretations on the use of the Ba Gua and above is one of them. In the `East' it is common to find religious practitioners `apply' the Ba Gua trigram or even simple mirrors to the homes of their followers. Toaist priests have often gone to homes to `bless them'. You can see mirrors and yellow charms pasted above the doors. (Do note that these charms are used to `ward-off evil or bad luck'. As the Ba Gua trigrams are an intergral part in Toaism, the use of it can be diverse. If one is interested in finding out more about the trigrams, one can get hold of books on I-Ching. There are quite a number of these books nowadays. Books interpreted from the original I-Ching book especially by James Legge etc... in the past, have a chapter on the `First Heaven Sequence' and `Later Heaven Sequence.'. On how, the two Trigrams (Ba Gua symbols) came about. The famous Chinese - Confucious had said that if he had lived another 50 years, he would have devoted his time to "try and understand the I-Ching". Thus, it would not be fair for anyone to `speak their mind' for or against the various methods on the use of the Ba Gua symbols. Dear Vijay, In my opinion, there are many other factors that can influence the sale of your house. Overall, the main factors are: 1. Location, location, location. 2. Selling price & market conditions. 3. Luck factor - however, there are said to be many forms of luck. Chinese divinity uses Pillars of Destiny (map out Heaven's luck) and try to increase this. 4. For Feng Shui, if there are salient or good points of the house under Feng Shui; one may try to `sell' this as value added - provided the buyer can be convinced about Feng Shui and good points about it. Dear Nina, 1. In my opinion, using `fixed' Ba Gua template is not proper FS concepts. 2. However, I have taken the opportunity to marked out the `centre-point' of your house. If you are using Compass School Feng Shui methods such as: Eight House of Flying Star, you can take a compass reading (refer to house1a.bmp) and `aim' the compass towards the main entrance. The compass reading will determine the direction of your main entrance door. 3. For the second part of the `L' shaped layout, you can super-impose the map to this other half. Dear Sarah, Thanks for bring up an interesting point. Yes, usually the question that it (slanted roof) is considered `inauspicious' has been brought up. But not how much `damage' it may cause. In my opinion, an overhead beam would be more inauspicious then say a slanted roof. I have audited several homes with slanted roof ranging from it in the bedroom area to the study room. Some of the rooms have the slanted roof away from the bed or study. While some rooms have it away from the study (chair area where one sits). Based on my personal experience; I feel that: 1. it depends on whether how long one spents at the sector (with the slopping ceiling). 2. if for example, the bed or study chair is away from the sloping ceiling, there is no impact. 3. But from several cases, I had audited previously, i.e. Para 1 senario, mostly, it is only `minor irritation' or quite minor `problems' associated with it (subject to how much time one spends there). Minor irritation in terms of some `hiccups' or minor stumbling blocks (in life) but not major ones (so far). LOCATION/SECTOR B Another location is `Chinatown'. It is worth visiting the following shopping centres there:- 1. The convex mirror is suppose to deflect the bad sha qi of the neighbours. 3.3 Usually, the convex mirror is used or more commonly used in the homes. 4. Some users had uploaded the file in word .doc with the sketch of their layout plan. 2. Other paint programs and saving the file as either: .jpg .bmp .gif The above are equally popular formats. 3. Scanner Alternatively, ask a friend for assistance to help you scan it using a scanner and saving it into a floppy disk. (After you have sketched a proper layout). 4. Dear Jeanette, 1. It is good to understand that, as a guide, a missing corner should be one where there is a 33.3 percent missing `area' in a specific sector. Here, the home is sub-divided in 9 equal divisions or a 3 x 3 grid. 2. It is good to examine, whether it is really a missing corner or a protrusion. As different `treatment'/intrepretation is used. 3. If there is a missing corner in the home and the house is a: 3.1 Landed property If it is a landed property, an outline of the `missing area' or boundary can be created outside the house. A top-view will then show that the missing area has been outlined by a boundary. The boundary can be shrubs, fencing or layout on the grass / concrete floor. One can also place pots of plants to form the `missing' outline. 3.2 An apartment/flat/condominium house One way is to install mirrors on the wall(s) to negate the `missing' corners. Some FS practitioners recommend; the placement of a wind chime. However, this should be done with care (after proper assessment). Else, one may use trial and error FS.
