Hi, I'm wondering about the "moving into a new house" ritual regarding the stove. Does it have to be a charcoal stove? Can I use a portable gas stove instead? Furthermore, for the stove (regardless of whether it is charcoal or gas) is there a minimum time it has to be burning?

Thanks.

1. Charcoal stove = traditional "portable" stove.

2. Portable gas stove = modern, non-traditional.

3. Para 1; considered NICE-to-Do. Not a MUST-Do.

4. Frankly, in my opinion, if you are considering Para2; above; you may be the very first in Singapore, JB, Batam and even in the Far East. And maybe, one day, this becomes a new tradition.

5. In my opinion, if one does not do Para 1; no need to go so far as to search for another more modern portable gas stove.

6. In fact, for the last 20 years or so; there are so many variants of the "lighted" stove:-

6.1. The most common method is buy one at the common neighbourhood store and add charcoal wrapped in red paper and bring it in "cold" to the home.

6.2. Many young couples skip this part

6.3. Some use "barbecue" utensils and heat up the charcoal and then bring this entity into the kitchen stove and continue to let it burn.

7. Frankly, there is NO FIXED RULESET as to what is right or wrong, here.

8. If it sounds functional; and makes you and your family feel good about it; then do it.

9. Additional note:-

9.1. For those staying in some private homes or certain condos that have smoke detectors built-in at the kitchen or lift lobb(ies)... beware!

9.2. Either you go for the smoke-free barbecue charcoal type of material or don't do it.
