These are some of the considerations:

1. Based on Shapes and Forms Feng Shui; your father-in-law is totally correct. Especially since this home has a cone shaped layout that is wide at the front and narrow at the back.

2. Thus, if it is the reverse i.e. the front is narrow to the widest part at the back - it is not the best but may / could be considered.

3. Shapes and Forms Feng Shui has a very high weigtage and often such leaks are considered "fatal" only psuedo cure - and may not even work.

4. Typical or main concern for such a home has to do with $$$$$ problems.

5. Do take your father-in-law's advice SERIOUSLY! It is better to find a "normal" house then to try and cure such a home. Sometimes.. the question asked is "is there a cure if any?".

6. Personally, I would avoid buying this house ... like the plague. Or to be direct: GIVE ME FREE (STAY)also I don't want TOO!

In general, more research need to be done further on this home. However, as mentioned, just by rule-of-thumb Shapes and Forms Feng Shui "It sucks!"

Anyway, in general, such a plot may / could / should / hopefully have a rectangular layout plan i.e. from top-view or helicopter view; the home should be as rectangular as possible.
