A 1960's tailor's shop front still around today

1. Observe the mosaic tiles adorning the floor of the tailor shop.

2. This establishment located on Tanjong Katong Road features a distinctive shop front characterized by two expansive display windows flanking either side.

3. Such architectural styles were prevalent during that era, with numerous shops along prominent streets like North Bridge Road showcasing similar designs.

"A Welcome FEEL of .... Kindly enter, please do come in."

image.png.28be710d6a2e94bd8cab86cd903d4e1c.png

4. It seems that marketing psychology was employed during that period, as the angled "V" display cabinets flanking either side were crafted to optimize display space and facilitate easy "a welcome" entry for passersby into the store.

5. This effectively illustrates the concept of "window shopping."

A CASE OF GONE WITH THE WIND?

Hi,

Have privately sent an email to you.

Please note that the photo was taken around 2015. Some 7 years ago. I believe it was somewhere around the area highlighted in red. Next alternative may be in blue.

But in my opinion, many of the old shops even Katong News Agency also perished ... to tons of eateries. This shop may equally have bitten the dust.

The trend of shop gates with aluminum casings gained prominence in the 1970s. At that time, aluminum was considered a high-quality material, valued for its lightweight properties and greater expense relative to iron or steel.

This design allows for a full frontal opening, as the gate rises entirely when opened.

After 45 years, the gate is expected to operate efficiently, with only minor dirt accumulation.

An uncommon V-shaped iron grille gate.

Extremely durable and provides complete concealment of the shop's interior.

This may explain the choice of this design by the motorcycle shop.

A Pawn Shop and a Chinese Physician’s Shop along East Coast Road [Close proximity to I12 Mall]

The popular mosaic and designer tiles, previously featured in the Chinese Physician's Shop, were replaced with homogeneous tiles during the 1990s.

223 East Coast Rd, Singapore 42892

Kai Clinic, located in Katong, has been operational since the 1950s, with its founding attributed to a physician known as Dr. Kong Kai. While the exterior has undergone modernization, the interior design remains largely unchanged from its original 1950s aesthetic.

The clinic's layout remains unchanged. However, some time ago, all the mosaic tiles on the floor were replaced with homogeneous tiles. Additionally, the bench seating has been updated to a more modern design.

The entrance of this clinic features a contemporary wheelchair-accessible ramp, as the "shop" floor [clinic] is situated below the street level.

REMINISCENT OF THE PAST

Zinc and aluminum toilet doors are typically seen in HDB three-bedroom apartments from the 1970s. Historically, these doors prioritized functionality over aesthetics. Their advantages include durability, resistance to corrosion, lightweight construction, and longevity.
