In my opinion, there are two schools of thought.

The Buddhist are very flexible and allows for even the joss urn to be removed, cleared and clean.

Some Taoist are told not to move the urn.

As there are so many variations, most of what wants to clean goes more into the realm of common sense.

Even dusting to “washing” the figures (if any).
