Dear Caryn,

As l know of that the South is inauspicious this year .

Lets first look at a few "relationships":-
1. The Five Elements, Numbers and Colours :-
(Since I am not using a table, some format could be out so I placed
commas between the relationships)
Cardinal Point / Five element / Number / Colour
North, Water element, 2 or 6, Black
East, Wood element, 4 or 8, Green or Brown
South, Fire element, 3 or 7, Purple or Red
West, Metal element, 1 or 9, White
Centre, Earth element, 5 or 10, Yellow
This year we get to hear the mysterious word " 5 yellow ". What
this simply means is that (from the above) 5 is
represented by Yellow or the Earth element. Therefore we call this " 5
yellow " or " 5 earth ". If we were to interpret the
word 5 yellow we would all be confused. Does it mean 5 yellow ...
something.... Hope this helps.
So in the same light, when one says 9 Purple, this simply means the
Fire element, Numerology 9 and the colour Purple.
Some Feng Shui Practioners like to use these words.
Next, these numbers are based on the 9 Stars or The Flying Star
Theory. (9 Star Ki is Japanese/American model is
one and the same).
From 16 Feb 1999 to 4 Feb 2000 or the Rabbit Year, The Flying Star
Chart for the Rabbit Year is as follows:-
Compass Direction / Star Number / Significance
North, Star 6, Average location
NE, Star 4, Good for Academic
East, or Location of the Grand Duke for this year
SE, Star 9, Good & Promotion
South, Star 5, Bad ( also known as 5 yellow)
SW, Star 7, Good, Wealth
West, 3 Killings or Legal Entanglements
Here you see that under the General Readings for this Year, the above
is a representation for this Year. This is why,
it is said not to dig earth or to " cool down " the South.
Is this good or bad?
As mentioned, this is a general reading for the year. You should look
at your own personal Flying Star Chart for the
year and even the birth chart of your house. If you do not have these,
then use the above as a general guide.
Hope this helps you and other users to understand the relationships and
the significance of the 9 Stars above.

In general, you can place a mirror in your dinning hall. However, if you do
not know much about whether the location or that wall is auspicious or not,
I would suggest not doing so. This is because, if the wall or area is
considered inauspicous, you are bouncing back or doubling the bad luck. This
could be worse. If you really do not know, but feel that you want to, you
are using " intuitive " form of Feng Shui. That is, put it there, if nothing
happens say within two weeks, you can leave it there. I am not encouraging
this form of Feng Shui but, this is what normally intuitive Feng Shui is all
about.
If anyone is practising this, the commonsense approach is not to do too many
enhancements at anyone time using the intuitive method. This is like for
e.g. an IBM or any Customer Service engineer would do to trace a fault. They
usually replace a part, monitor it and then if it still gives a problem,
resolve the problem further... If anyone reading this the first time and
wonder what sort of advice, I am providing, erh.... I know that there are
quite alot of Feng Shui theories and this form of trial and error Feng Shui
is going to stay because of so many self-help books etc.... But if you like
to use sound Feng Shui principles, I strongly recommend Eight House, Flying
Star and even Pillars (finding your true element and strength) and applying
this with the 5 elements.
Warmest Regards,
Cecil
