julie
Hello :) Many thanks for posting such valuable information in this forum! My question regards having the stove next to the refrigerator. I recently moved the fridge to a better location away from the stove and my husband doesn't like it at all. He has offered to help me re-do and make the necessary changes to the house for better feng shui -IF- I move the fridge back to where it was. Your thoughts on this would be appreciated. Also, if the stove IS next to the fridge; is there any cure for that? example: placing a wood wall exactly between the two? Thanks.julie
Administrator
Dear Julie,A stove can still be placed next to the refrigerator but give an allowanceof at least six inches or 150 cm. It would not be ideal to place a woodwall unless it is heat resistant. If you can leave a gap as suggested above, then it would be OK to move back the fridge without the need to place awooden wall partition.Warmest Regards,Cecil Lee-----Original Message-----From: Listmanager To: Recipients of 'free-advice' suppressed suppressed>Date: Tuesday, April 06, 1999 12:26 AMSubject: stove next to fridge?? pikkie
Dear CecilThanks for a great forum!I have my microwave oven on top of my fridge. I know this is not ideal, but it is difficult to put it anywhere else. I have however, placed a block of chipboard/wood approximately an inch thick between the fridge and the microwave so that they are not in direct contact with eachother. I was also hoping that the wood element would bridge the contrasting fire and water element. Do you think this is completely unacceptable?Best regardsToni Pedro
Staff Robert Lee Posted April 8, 1999 Staff Share Posted April 8, 1999 Dear Toni,I believe there are two schools of thought in considering a microwave oven:-1. One school of thought is that microwave ovens were never invented inancient times and some Feng Shui practioners may argue that since this isthe case, there is no standard way to say whether it is good or bad FengShui. This camp will usually be not sure and can either give you a Yes or Noanswer.2. The second school of thought is that a stove is different from amicrowave. Under the Five Elements concept, the characteristic of a stove isthat the fire flows upwards and thus this is considered a `Fire element'.However, if you are only using the microwave, it implies energy that `flows'inwards which has the characteristics of the metal element. Therefore if youare only using the microwave and not the `oven' feature, then in this case,it no longer represents the fire element.Currently, it is my belief that the microwave represents the `metal' elementand not fire element which has no effect on the water element unless you usethe `oven' feature. In such a case, there is no longer a clash of Water andFire element or a clash of yin and yang.As I mentioned earlier, the microwave is new and in my opinion, I willclassify the microwave as belonging to the metal element based on thereasoning in para 2. In such a situation, there is no effect of themicrowave on top of the water element i.e. the fridge. However, can I ask you a question?Which direction is the microwave located and whether do you have a stove?1. If you have only the microwave in the home, this is not favourable inFeng Shui as one should ideally also have a stove in the kitchen torepresent the fire element.2. If you only have the microwave and if it situated at the North sector ofthe home, this is equally unacceptable as the North represents water elementand worse still if you do not have a stove, your kitchen is considered`cold' and thus you most unlikely can retain the warmth in your home.3. It is acceptable to have a stove and a microwave in the home. Butremember not to have two set of stoves in the home. This is considered veryinauspicious.Like I mentioned, earlier, a microwave is a modern `invention' and based onit's characteristics of energy moving `inwards', it can be classifed as ametal element. If you are using the oven feature, then the heating elementwill (glow... unseen inside the microwave) and it is considered a Fireelement. If you are using it more often as a fire element, then, it is bestnot to place the `oven' on top of the fridge as this is a real clash andvery inauspicious.Hope that helps.Cecil-----Original Message-----From: Listmanager To: Recipients of 'free-advice' suppressed suppressed>Date: Thursday, April 08, 1999 4:57 PMSubject: Re: stove next to fridge?? pikkie
Dear CecilIn answer to your question, yes I have a stove in my kitchen as well. This is placed against the south wall of my kitchen. Since this would be a fire area, I trust this is in order. However, the door of the oven does face the entrance to the kitchen, and the entrance to the kitchen is close to the main entrance(at a right angle). I hope all that warmth is not going straight out the door too fast.As for the microwave - I'm relieved to hear it can stay on top of the fridge, since it is not a convection microwave oven and therefore not used to cook food in the conventional sense. Thanks again for clarifying this for me.Kind regardsToni Pedro

I hope all that warmth is not goingstraight out the door too fast. Since the stove is in the south, this is acceptable because at the southposition, the stove is able to `retain' the heat as it is at it's mostcomfortable location i.e. South.Normally, if the stove is at the South position, you can have the stove facea water element e.g. a frige. This is because a stove at the south can stillbe `cooled' down by the water element opposite it. Contrast this if youplace a stove e.g. in the North sector. Here, you must not let the stoveface a water element else the `warmth' will `die off'.In your case, the `heat' can still escape and you will not have a problem. But do not "purposely" add a water position in front of it as it may offsetthis `delicate' balance. Yes, the microwave is not considered a fire element and it is no problemplacing on top of the fridge.Cecil
