Staff Cecil Lee Posted August 6, 2001 Staff Share Posted August 6, 2001 An intriguing article that explores the concept of what constitutes 'true peace.' A depiction of tranquility... Once, a monarch announced a competition for the artist who could create the finest representation of peace. Numerous artists participated, and the king reviewed all the submissions. Ultimately, he found himself drawn to two particular works, necessitating a choice between them. The first artwork portrayed a serene lake, which served as a flawless reflection of the majestic mountains surrounding it. Above, a clear blue sky adorned with fluffy white clouds completed the idyllic scene. Viewers unanimously regarded this piece as the epitome of peace. The second artwork also featured mountains, but these were rugged and stark. An ominous sky loomed overhead, unleashing rain and flashes of lightning. A tumultuous waterfall cascaded down the mountainside, presenting a stark contrast to the notion of tranquility. However, upon closer inspection, the king noticed a small bush nestled in a crevice behind the waterfall. Within this bush, a mother bird had constructed her nest. Amidst the chaos of the rushing water, the mother bird sat on her nest, embodying perfect peace. Which artwork do you believe received the prize? The king awarded the second piece. He explained, "True peace does not imply the absence of noise, challenges, or labor. Rather, it signifies maintaining calmness within one's heart despite the surrounding turmoil. This is the true essence of peace."
