I had the same "situation/problem" in my house and although I can't quote the source of the cure (don't remember in which book I read it) one way to "help" is to line up your books with the front edge of the shelf, rather than having them toward the back. Blinds are a better alternative in such a situation since, one can manipulate it to filter as much light into the room (if possible).
