Staff Cecil Lee Posted August 3, 2006 Staff Share Posted August 3, 2006 Dear Anon,In Asia, in my opinion, the most popular set of display figurines has got to be the "Fu Lu Shou" set of threefigurines.Either in a set or lettering. Before the popularity of the laughing buddha or buddha figurines; the above can be found in many "well-to-do"Chinese homes as early as 1960's. They are in-fact very popular right up today. The "Fu Lu Shou" figurines do not have any religious connotationsbut simply many Chinese love to display this set of three wise persons. As mentioned as one of the most popular display items of any Chinese homes. Thesethree figurines comes in many sizes, large, medium and small. They come in all sorts of material from gold, silver plated to ceramics, jade, wood or other materials.Locally, many modern Chinese or in Singapore; in my opinion, very few "English" educated Chinese display the laughing buddha in their homes. I foundin particular, many Chinese educated Singaporeans and many live in three or four room Housing board apartments love to display it facing their door! As mentioned, most likely, the Englisheducated Singaporeans, felt that the "laughing buddha" is more associated withthe buddhist "religion"and thus perhaps not as popular as the "neutral" Fu Lu Shou figurines.Frankly, there is no harm in buying onemerely as a display. And certainly nottopray to. I believe, the smileof the laughing buddha is suppose or perhaps make some people -- erh.. happy...hmm..For the Chinese, for those who buy a figurine to pray e.g. such as theGoddness of Mercy is a very common thing forsome Singapore Chinese couples. Usually, a geomancer often recommends the type of material that the couple should purchase: For example, if the breadwinner is a weak wood person then recommended to purchasesaythe Goddness of Mercy made of wood.If the breadwinner is considered as a weak water person, then perhaps, the geomancer would recommend a gold or plain white goddness of mercy. As gold or white represents the metal element. Thus metal supports a "weak water" person. Here, no matter what theory is used, Chinese traditional analysis always has much to do with the Five Elements concept:-http://www.geomancy.net/resources/theories/fs-5element.htmSo don't worry, if you like it (decoration or the "feel-nice-factor") just get it!Warmest Regards,CecilQuote:Anonymous wrote:Is it true?. because I always believed Laughing Buddha means presence of something good, pure at your place and so its good for every one
